FAQ

So, I really don't get a lot of Frequently Asked Questions because:
  1. Not really many people read this blog besides my Mom and Boyfriend.
  2. It's Pretty Damn Straightforward.
But, I decided to talk about and answer perhaps the ONLY Question that I DO get about this Blog:

What Does "Friend of Dorothy" Mean?

For those of you that don't know... "Friend of Dorothy" is pretty much just code for a gay person. Let's take a look at what Urban Dictionary.Com has to say about the matter, shall we?

Friend Of Dorothy: A codeword to identify someone or oneself that is gay. The friends of Dorothy from the movie "The Wizard of Oz"are commonly considered within the gay community as gay.

For Example: Did you know Michael was a "Friend of Dorothy"?

Now that we've all cleared that up, when I decided on the name...two famous Dorothy's came to mind. One was OBVIOUSLY Judy Garland, Dorothy from the Wizard of OZ:
"Look Mama! I'm a STAR! See? See?!?!"

And the late but GREAT Bea Arthur, Dorothy Zbornak from The Golden Girls:

Even in a Glamour Shot, Bea looks like she will gut you like a fish.
Both of these women are Gay Icons in their own right. It's no question that Judy Garland was loved by the Gays, I mean...she gave BIRTH to Liza Minelli for Chrissakes! And The Golden Girls is surprisingly a Cult Hit amongst gay people, at least every gay person I have EVER met.

I also realized that these women pretty much both reside in my head. The Community Theater Person in me definitely has the tenacity and the STAR hunger of Judy Garland. She's sweet, she's cute, she'll make ya laugh, she'll make ya cry, and above all else, you're gonna remember my NAME! But I also have the cynical, sarcastic wit and biting tongue of Miss Dorothy from the Golden Girls. A little nerdy, a little too well read, a little too hermetic at times. A little turned off by the world around her.
So I pretty much just thought the name fit me PERFECTLY and I went with it. I have wanted to do an advice column where Dorothy & Dorothy answer readers' questions but all things in time. For now, I will just stick with my stories and we will see how long it takes for one of these ladies to pop out from the recesses of my mind!
